Image SEO One-Pager

What's inside

  • File names: camera-style names next to descriptive, hyphenated alternatives.
  • Alt text: examples rated from missing to good for the same photo, plus rules on length, decorative images and phrases to leave out.
  • Formats: which formats suit photos, transparent graphics, logos and animation, and the formats Google supports.
  • Size and speed: resizing, compression, width and height attributes, lazy loading and responsive images.
  • Context: placing images near related text, using original photos and avoiding CSS background images for anything important.

Who it's for

Content editors, ecommerce teams and business owners who upload images to their own website, as well as designers handing files over to a web team.

How to use it

Keep it beside you when preparing images: rename the file, resize and compress it, then write alt text that describes what the image shows and why it's on the page. For existing pages, start with your busiest pages and product images. Ask your developer to confirm that lazy loading and responsive images are set up, and that the main hero image loads straight away rather than lazily.
